Overview

Shenzhen is nicknamed Pengcheng, the "City of the Roc." This show tells the story behind that name. Over seven acts and about two hours, you follow a descendant of the Wen family, one of the region's old clans, as they search for their roots. The journey crosses centuries of Shenzhen history, staged around your table while you dine.

The Story

The tale draws on two sources. One is Dapeng Fortress, the coastal stronghold that guarded this shore for centuries. The other is the ancient myth of the Kun, a giant fish that transforms into the Peng, a mythical bird of enormous size. From there, the show traces the city's past:

The origin of the name Pengcheng
The ancient mountains and sea
The coastal defenses that shaped the region
Life alongside the fishing communities
Trade along the Maritime Silk Road
The living heritage that remains today

The circular 360° performance hall has a domed projection screen overhead and professional stage lighting. Song and dance, theatrical scenes, and the traditional Lingnan lion dance, a recognized intangible cultural heritage, play out around you. Characters interact with guests throughout, drawing you into the story.

Each of the seven acts comes with its own course, so the meal follows the story from start to finish.
